News of the Day - 06 April 2015

    1) DRB-Hicom Bhd is set to penetrate the Indonesian automotive market with its two Volkswagen models, Polo and Jetta, in the near future. International Trade and Industry Miister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed said the first batch for export will consist of 500 completely-knocked-down units that are assembled at the DRB-Hicom automotive complex in Pekan.

    2) Proton Holdings Bhd, a unit of DRB-Hicom Bhd, expects to return its sports-car unit Lotus Group plc and itself around by the financial year ending march 31, 2016 (FY16). Proton chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Harith Abdullah said the turnaround will be driven by improved sales and after-sales services, cost optimization as well as establishing a "long-range product plan" to offer a variety of models up to 2019.

    3) Proton Holdings is optimistic of recording higher sales of about 130,000 units this year compared with 115,000 units in 2014, amid lower car prices following the goods and services tax (GST). Chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Harith Abdullah said that the target was also driven by positive sales record for the Iriz and Saga models as well as the higher industry growth projection of 2% to 3%.

“Currently, Iriz contributes about 50% to our sales and Saga about 40%,” he told the media after the site visit by Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Ahmad Maslan to Proton Centre of Excellence. Abdul Harith said the national carmaker was on its way to recovery after hitting its lowest sales last year with fewer than 10,000 units per month. “I am confident that we can surpass sales of 10,000 units for March,” he said, adding that the sentiment for the export market also remained positive with about 5,000 units sold last year. 4) Sales of used cars are expected to be flat this year, despite being largely unaffected by the goods and services tax (GST). An industry observer said the decrease in car prices would encourage people to buy new cars instead of used ones. According to Federation of Motor and Credit Companies
